Inspired by her passion for outer space and the physical sciences, Mizzou student Alexis Bilderback has found her future among the stars. Thanks to support from the College of Arts and Science and participation in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures’ (SLLC) study abroad program, Bilderback pursued a hands-on international research experience that clarified her future in science and strengthened her interest in a career in astrochemistry.
A double major in physics and chemistry, Bilderback spent seven weeks in Catania, Italy, through SLLC’s Sicily, Italy study abroad program, where she completed a four-week internship at the University of Catania’s Astrophysics Institute. Supported by a College of Arts and Science Global Experiences Scholarship, the experience immersed her in real-world research while expanding her network.
Bilderback worked directly with advanced astronomical equipment and research technologies, gaining hands-on skills essential for her future career in astronomy.
Her responsibilities included calibrating an RCX400 Meade telescope with a new equatorial mounting system, gathering first light observational data, and using Python for data reduction and analysis. She also authored an operations manual for future researchers and students who will use the telescope.
"This internship showed me that my skills are needed in the field and gave me the confidence to pursue a career as an astrochemical researcher," Bilderback said.
Bilderback’s next steps include completing her degrees in physics and chemistry, pursuing additional research opportunities, and earning a doctorate in astrochemistry. She also hopes to return to Catania to continue collaborating with the researchers she met during her internship.
